Brown & Sharpe
Founded in 1833 in Providence, Rhode Island, Brown & Sharpe are a metalworking equipment and metrology company. The company is owned by Swiss global company Hexagon Metrology Inc, since its acquisition in 2001. Brown & Sharpe now manufacture specialist metrology equipment and provide a range of TESA products of precision measuring instruments, height gauges and measuring machines. Earlier product lines included metalworking machinery including surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, screw machines and more.
Since the acquisition by Hexagon, Brown & Sharpe are still branded in the measuring industry under Brown & Sharpe, Valueline, TESA, and INTERAPID brands.
With a history dating back to the mid 1800’s Brown & Sharpe quickly established a market for sewing machines, clippers and milling machines and was central to many historic USA construction milestones, such as the railroads and major cities. The company is famed for its inventions and patents, especially the American Wire Gauge, machine tool taper and Brown & Sharpe Worm Thread. The multi acclaimed precision range models changed the way tools were manufactured across the world.
The company is still based in Rhode Island, USA and has subsidiary offices in the UK and Asia. The company employs around 400 people. Hexagon Metrology INC offer a wide range of CMM, gauges and hand tools, probes and laser equipment, retaining Brown & Sharpe’s range of grinders and precision tool making equipment. These products are used in foundries and the many industries including aerospace, automotive and domestic appliances.
