Formed in 1925, in California, Caterpillar was the result of a merger of C L Best Tractor Company and Holt Machinery. The first product lines developed by Caterpillar were five track tractors used in agricultural industries. Caterpillar equipment is now manufactured in Europe, Asia and South America largely for agricultural and construction industries.
Caterpillar is based in Peoria, Illinois and operates through a large network of global agents and distributors. Caterpillar is a key player in the design, manufacture and selling of machinery and equipment used in construction, mining, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
Over the last 40 years the company has grown through acquisition, including MWM Holding GmbH, a German manufacturer of gas and diesel powered generator sets, Pyroban Group Ltd, a UK based company in gas safety machinery and Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. a US based company building large gas driven engines for use in the railroad industry.
In addition to the large numbers of Caterpillar equipment manufactured for agriculture and construction industries, Caterpillar also offer a range of financial products, especially funding and insurance, and also licenses out the brand for clothing and joint branding.
