The MV50 encoder features an intelligent MPEG-2 preprocessor called ENRGY. ENRGY enhances proven techniques such as Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) and border processing and adds several new filters to deliver high quality video. The filter control in the MV50 is tightly integrated with Harmonic's award-winning LookAhead architecture.

LookAhead technology uses a multiple encoding process to analyze video before applying the appropriate filtering and encoding strategies. ENRGY incorporates noise analysis into LookAhead that allows more precise noise reduction. Noisy video is cleaned up while clean video is untouched. The end result is better looking video with less bandwidth used.

Powered by three C-Cube Microsystems DVxpert processors, the MV50 encoder combines new algorithms with extensive video analysis to maximize efficiency. The MPEG-2 compliant MV50 encoder features a one rack-unit design, excellent picture quality, and SNMP-based network management. The MV50 encoder includes a number of new audio options, enhanced variable bit rate support, and is integrated with the Harmonic suite of network management tools.

Understanding Noise
Noise refers to any random, unwanted component of a digital video signal that can ultimately degrade picture quality. Noise wastes bits in the encoding process and can cost a large amount of bandwidth. Removing noise saves bits to enhance the quality of the video output.
