FlashNews is a client-server based multimedia application that makes the job of journalists easier in preparing their stories, and it makes the job of technical managers easier in managing the frantic deadline-driven daily operation of their installation.;What is the workflow provided by FlashNews?;Planning: The time and number of the news shows per day, week, month, and their rough structure with placeholders is created on the FlashNews interface.;Assignment: The news stories on individual rundowns are assigned to journalists who can see all tasks assigned to them from their own login.;Acquisition: Journalists start browsing for material to produce their story. They have a variety of information sources at their disposal: the wire agencies, rss feeds, web sites, the existing media archive of the station, or any external video file. Journalists can browse for all these information sources from their single FlashNews interface. They upload all the required materials, whether it comes from the archive or camera, whether it is a text document or picture or audio file, in the workspace of the news item keep there until the production of the story is finished.;Visual and Textual Editing: Journalists write their news using the word processing tools built into the interface. They write the prompter and CG text as well. As they finish with each part of the text (prompter, CG, story) they mark that part as complete, which updates all users about the readiness state of that news story. They do rough cut editing using the materials they collected in their workspace, using the timeline editor, and do their voiceover. If more detailed editing and compositing is required, the timeline is exported to an NLE, rendered and the file is imported back into the FlashNews workspace. If only cut editing and voiceovers are required, then the rendering of the timeline is done by FlashNews. The journalists marks the resulting video as the on-air copy and approves it, which notifies the other users that the story is completed.;Rundown Management: The stories are placed inside the rundowns, whose templates were preapared beforehand. They can be placed before they are fully ready, the interface shows detailed information about the readiness state of the stories inside a rundown (like, video missing, prompter not approved, cg not approved, etc). Users with the sufficient rights (e.g the news mananagers) can publish the rundown. Which means, the video clips are realized as a playlist and sent to the playout server/automation system, the graphics are realized as a CG playlist and sent to the graphics server and the prompter texts are sent as a playlist to the teleprompter. The publishing can be done before all the items are ready to be broadcast, as more and more stories get completed, the rundown is published again which updates the exported lists.;On-Air: When it’s time to go on-air, FlashNews can notify users if the playout server is up, if the correct playlist is loaded and if the playout server is playing or not. Users with the necessary rights, can modify the rundown (add, remote, re-order stories, edit/update incomplete stories) and publish again. When rundown is published while on-air, all three lists (playout, CG, prompter) are updated together and stay in synch. FlashNews can even reckognise changes done on the playout order via playout operators and inform newsroom operators, who then have the option to match the rundown and the CG/prompter lists to the playout or to match the playout to the rundown, with a single command.;Cleanup and Archive: After the stories are broadcasted and used, the users can optionally send their videos to MAM for archiving. Videos that are not archived by MAM can be automatically deleted after a while by FlashNews via the built in Garbage Collection feature. There can be separate deadlines for deleting the the video files only, or both the video file and the story itself.;What are the benefits of FlashNews?;All Creative Tools at the Fingertips of the Journalists;FlashNews: a versatile feed and news reader that comes with video player, a flexible text editor with spell checker and proofing tools, timeline based editor for easy cut editing and voiceover... These are just some parts of the cutting edge technology that is under the hood of FlashNews.;Customisable Feed and News Pool Structure;FlashNews allows the wires and the news pools to be set up in a customizable hierarchy and organization so that it fits the way the users like to organize its news data, instead of the other way around.;Built in Video Player and Editor;FlashNews has a graphic browser with thumbnails that allows journalists to get visual information about the feeds and stories at a single glance. The built in editing timeline, allows non-technical people like journalists to make their own video editing. The built-in video players allow previewing videos, giving in-out point and previewing the timeline.;Proxy Generation and Transcoding;FlashNews can automatically generate proxy versions of all material like feeds, imported files etc. so that users can view videos without bandwidth issues and playback of videos from internet is possible. FlashNews can also transcode between the different formats supported and render a timeline. All transcode and rendering operations are done on the server side so that users are free to work on other tasks on their client software.;Workflow and Monitoring; The ability to assign news items to journalists makes it easy to distribute and manage the daily work load. Journalists can at all times see which stories are assigned to them. Managers at a single glance view the state of the stories, which parts have been completed and which have not. They can even track which changes have been done on the stories by the users.;Security and Comprehensive Management Tools; There are separate and dedicated rights to view, edit, approve, schedule and publish news, which puts into the manager’s hand complete control over who can do what with the system. There are user actions log which allows managers to search and browse who has done what on the system.;Extreme Ease of Use;Being loaded with features, should not mean it takes a team of rocket scientist to create and manage a news program. Everything about FlashNews is designed to make it as easy as possible to see, view, watch and do as many things, with as few commands as possible.;Multi Language;FlashNews accepts input in multiple languages including right to left. Further, the user interface is also translateable to multiple languages;Seamless Integration with Metus MAM;Metus MAM, already a top end media management solution, integrates seamlessly with FlashNews. It is possible to browse and search the MAM directly from the Flashnews interface, copy videos from MAM to Flashnews workspace, and archive videos from FlashNews interface back to MAM.;Works with Affordable Equipment; Not only is FlashNews itself affordable, it also works with affordable products. FlashNews does not require MOS, and can use the custom API and playlist formats of low cost playout and CG servers that do not have MOS technology, bringing a feature rich high end newsroom solution to users of such products.;MOS Compatible; On the other hand, FlashNews is MOS enabled, so it will work with high end automation and graphics products as well. The integrated production tools, the powerful asset management and video processing functions, coupled with the MOS support, already make FlashNews compatible with high end newsroom applications
