In 1996 Sony Professional introduced their first HD camcorders. Intended for highest definition, high quality video recording in a portable format. The original Sony Professional HD camcorders came with bespoke firmware and expansion applications.
The current range of Sony Professional HD Camcorders have two main products, the HDWF900R and HDW650P. The 900R was introduced in 2008 and comes with Cinealta functionality, which is a multi scan viewfinder. The 900R has 1080 line resolution ensuring the highest possible picture quality. The predecessor to the 900R, the 900 was the world's first 24P CineAlta HD camcorder, and it received a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award in 2004. The other key difference between the 900 and the 900R was the newer model had a smaller, lighter chassis and also power consumption was reduced with new features and the new camcorder meets the latest EU environmental legislation.
The HDW650P Sony Professional HD camcorder has high definition acquisition technology to capture HD images. The device can record pictures in 1080/50i and 59.94i interlace mode, as well as in 1080/25P where a natural 'film look' is required and this suits documentary and sports documentation. The camcorder has three newly developed 2/3-inch type Power HAD FX CCDs, a 14-bit A/D converter, and DSP LSI signal processing. This ensures wide tonal reproduction, as well as a high sensitivity of F12 at 50 Hz.
