HDRx is a special recording mode in the Epic Camera that allows you to extend the dynamic range from 2 to 6 stops above the native exposure. When HDRx is activated, the camera simultaneously records two images at the same resolution and frames per second. The main image (A-Track) is the image with normal exposure. The secondary image (X-track) is the same image with a modified exposure that provides “highlight protection”, configurable through a menu. The cinematographer can select the protection he deems necessary in stops: 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. Each stop represents one stop less in shutter exposure speed, for example with 2 protection stops (HDRx Mode) and a primary exposure of 1/48sec, the X-track will have 2 stops less exposure, that is 1/192 sec. There is no separation in time between the two exposures (but there is a difference in blur), the two images (A & X) are stored in the same R3D file. An example for typical use could be in those situations where you are recording with a window in the background on a sunny day: to prevent the window from exploding you need to do one of two things:

– Put ND gel on all windows or use ND filter on camera (if there is no movement)
– Or compensate for outside light using large HMIs inside the location.

However, by setting the exposure normally (to the subject) with the Epic camera in HDRx mode it is possible to get a second shot simultaneously with a lower exposure. Then in post we must "mix the two images" until we obtain all the information. Thanks to HDRx we can capture up to 18 STOPS of latitude. In other words, with Epic in HDRx mode it is possible to fix clipped highlights in post in a way that was not possible before.
The cost of all this HDRX recording process is an increase in the size of the files that will occupy twice the disk space.
