1997 PTA manufacturing facility
with annual capacity of 330 KTY in Indonesia which is kept under mothball condition.
The process for manufacturing PTA ( Purified Terepthalic Acid ) is by oxidation of Paraxylene in the liquid phase at elevated temperature & pressure in the presence of a solvent acetic and oxidation catalyst. The technology has been provided by Eastman Chemicals Co, USA.
The plant consist of 4 main secitons CTA ( Crude Terepthalic Acid ), PTA ( Purified Terepthalic Acid ), FPP ( Filrae Purge Process ) & AD ( Acid Disillaion ).
In the CTA section Paraxylene feed stock reacts with air in presence of Acid solvent and Catalyst solution. The major proportion of he Terephthalic acid produced in this exohermic reaction precipitates to form a slurry in the Oxidizer. The product underflow from Oxidizer ( CTA ) contains impurities ( about 0.7% 4CBA ) which makes it unsuitable for making Polyeser and is furher purified in the PTA section.
PTA section to reduce the impurities level to around 200 ppm 4 CBA ( Carboxy Benzaldehyde Acid ). CTA slurry containing impurities, solvent & catalyst is washed wih fresh acid in Disc Centrifuge where 90% of dirty acid containing catalyst is replaced by fresh Acid. This is done to reduce the severity of the furher Oxidation and hence reduce Acid burning losses. The slurry is fed to a series of three Digesters where it is furher oxidized with air to convert 4 CBA on TA.
The product is flash cooled filtered in Rotary Vacuum Filters and then dried in screw dryer. The product is pneumatically conveyed to product day silos. The product from day silos goes to product silos after passing the analysis. Any off spec product is taken to a off spec silo and is reslurried with acetic acid. This slurry is fed back o Digesters for reprocessing.
In the FPP section a purge stream of dirty acid from washing centrifuge ( of PTA ) is processed to control the impurity level in the product. The acetic acid in this stream is extracted with normal propyl acetate ( NPA ) and recovered in a distillation column. The residue is further neuralized with caustic and sent to Effluent reament Plant for further treament.
In Acid Distillation the condensate from overhead condenser, seal fluid from filters, offgas absorber stream of oxidizer is sent to Acid Distillation where water & acid are separated using azeotropic distillation. The solvent used is NPA.
The plant is designed for completely continuous operation.
